Ehlers Baumschulpflanzen, based in Westerstede-Hüllstede in the Ammerland region, has stood for high-quality plant production for decades, with a clear focus on professional garden centres, horticultural nurseries and wholesale businesses. What began in the 1950s with traditional farming, tobacco cultivation and the first crops of Erica and Picea omorika, has developed continuously: with an ever-growing range of varieties, the establishment of modern container areas and sustainable cultivation methods, a powerful and efficient nursery business has evolved – now covering around 20 hectares, including 14 hectares of container areas and 14,500 m² of greenhouse space.
The current GmbH was founded on 1 July 1997 by Jürgen and Ulf Ehlers. Since 2015, Rieke Ehlers has joined the management team and, with great dedication, continues to lead the company into the future. We produce a wide-ranging and versatile selection of container-grown plants in sizes from C2 to C20 – sustainably and in close harmony with nature, in line with our company philosophy.
At Ehlers, sustainability is second nature – our nursery is located within a water protection area. Over recent years, the topic has become even more important, and a certified eco-label now ensures transparency in our production processes.
Our ecological approach includes:
• a closed-loop water cycle
• an overall reduction in the use of plant protection products
• regular manual pruning
• mulching of all pots using a modern mulching machine (which not only improves the plant’s appearance but also reduces the use of plant protection products by up to 80 %)
• use of electric vehicles for most internal transport
• on-site solar power generation through our own photovoltaic system
To ensure greater transparency for our customers, plants that are bee-friendly, bird-friendly or suitable for dry locations are clearly labelled with corresponding icons on our plant tags.
